Jean's horror over dog find Published Date: 20 February 2009 By Marissa Carruthers
An animal lover has spoken of her disgust at her grim discovery after she found a dead dog that had been stabbed in the head. Jean Frost with the dead dog she found on the Dene next to Newport Rise. Jean Frost was disgusted when a pal told her she had stumbled across the brutally disfigured greyhound in land near Dene Street, Silksworth when she was walking her dog. She phoned police, who took a bread knife that lay next to the dog away to be examined. And the 46-year-old was horrified when she returned to the site a week later and found the animal's body was still there. Mrs Frost, of Thorney Close, said: "My friend was walking her dog when she found this greyhound with a knife lying next to it. "She looked at it closer and it had stab wounds to its head and the rest of its body and there was a knife lying next to its legs. "Its ears were also filled with blood so it was definitely stabbed. "She called the police and someone came out to take some pictures and they took the knife with them." Mrs Frost, who has volunteered with several animal rescue centres across the region, said the dog looked as though it had been badly treated and was malnourished. She said: "It's disgusting and pathetic that anyone could do something like this. There's absolutely no need to stick a knife into a dog's head. "Even people who are not working can go to the PDSA and get free help or get them put down humanly. "Or there's greyhound rescue centres they can be taken to. "There were bones sticking out of its body and it looked extremely thin like it hadn't been looked after. It's so sad." A police spokesman said: "On Wednesday, February 11, police received a report of a dead dog in woods near to Dene Street, Silksworth. Police attended the area but were unable to locate the dog. "On Thursday, February 12, police were assisted in finding the dog by the member of the public who had initially reported it. "The dog was found away from the main walking tracks in a remote part of the wood. Police also recovered a knife at the scene. "Council cleansing teams were called to remove the dog's body and the RSPCA were also informed about the discovery." Anyone wanting to report animal cruelty can seek advice from the RSPCA by phoning 0300 1234 999.

Dog's 'disgusting death the tip of the iceberg'
Derry Journal- Ireland
A dog carcass washed up along the bank of the River Foyle recently.
Published Date: 06 March 2009
This "shocking and disgusting" picture reveals a dog trussed up in a potato
sack which had been thrown in the River Foyle to die.
The animal's carcass was then washed ashore in a quiet Derry suburb where it
still lies on the riverbank.
In an illfated fight for survival the animal was able to force its hind
legs' through the sack but was unable to escape.
This, according to Joanne Mullan, a volunteer at the Rainbow Animal Shelter
who attended the scene, displays a level of animal cruelty described as 'the
tip of an iceberg in the North West'.
Remarkably the pictures were taken by Ms. Mullan while investigating a
totally separate case of animal cruelty on the Bay Road Industrial Estate.
Having first received a call concerning a cat trapped in a hamster cage, Ms.
Mullan found: "to my horror, the cats back legs were badly injured before
the animal was caged and abandoned in the middle of the Bay Road."
There was nothing anyone could do and a veterinarian was called who had no
choice but to put the animal to sleep. It is believed the cat was a
household pet.
"This is something I have never seen in my life before," said Joanne who has
worked at the animal shelter for the last ten years.
It was while attending to the cat that a passer by informed her of the dead
dog on the riverbank.
"It was a horrible day and it was clear that this dog was still alive when
dumped in the river, as it pushed its legs through the sack. Although badly
decomposed I believe it to be a greyhound carcass.
"This animal died a horrific horrendous death. This is totally inexcusable
and absolutely disgusting but probably is just the tip of the iceberg."

Greyhound dumped with ears cut off
Yet more distressing news of a mutilated greyhound found on February 14th which had been dumped on
wasteland near the village of Iron Acton.
Iron Acton, on the outskirts of Bristol, is situated less than 30 miles from Swindon dog track - a
licensed stadium.
Not only had this poor greyhound's ears been hacked off - to prevent the tracing of the last
registered owner - the greyhound was heavily pregnant with six pups.
The RSPCA are hoping someone will recognise the dog, who is black with white markings under her chin
and a white blaze between her forelegs, as well as two white spots on her throat.
RSPCA inspector John Atkinson said: This is a very distressing incident for all involved and we are
investigating every possible avenue. If any member of the public saw people dumping the dog, or
knows of a dog answering this description, I would urge them to contact the RSPCA at once.
We would ask all supporters to highlight not only this disgusting crime but also the exploitation of
racing of greyhounds by writing to the Bristol Evening Post

**Greyhound Grace needs a home
**
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 10:34
A GREYHOUND found abandoned in Sittingbourne and nursed back to health with help from a Faversham
vet is looking for a new home. The young dog, nicknamed Grace, was picked up by Swale Council's
stray dog service, suffering a badly broken leg, and was taken to Borden Lane Veterinary Surgery.
Andrew Wills, a specialist in leg-pinning surgery at Toachim House veterinary surgery in Faversham,
saved Grace's leg from amputation, charging a reduced fee, and she is now being cared for by staff
at the Borden Lane Surgery.
Grace is described as having a lovely temperament and needs a loving and caring home with owners who
are able to be patient with her while her leg continues to heal.
Anyone who thinks they could offer a good home to Grace should call the council's animal control
officer, Tim Oxley, on 01795 417298.
